Friendly Monsters

So many elements of design went into our Friendly Monsters

In this activity we explored:

* colour
* line
* space
* shape

Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak served as our inspiration.

Thinking Critically About What Makes A Good Friend

We have been talking a lot about friendship and have decided on some criteria for judging whether someone is a good friend. Take a look at what we came up with and decide, do you meet the criteria for what makes a good friend?

Friendly Numbers In Math...Just think about it!

We love the number 5! Did you know that 5 is a "Friendly Number"?  Friendly Numbers are numbers we can use when counting, adding, subtracting and more. They are numbers that are easy to count up from or count down from. When we need to add 5 + 2, we can just count up from 5.  We know it is 5 without re-counting and we look for this number to make our math work easier.  We can also break numbers into parts using 5 - 6 is 5 + 1, 8 is 5 + 3.  Take a look at these math journals using 5 as a starting number and counting on.

We are always looking for ways we can solve problems more efficiently.  Identifying and using 5 is one way we can do this. As this student says...

"Thikabadet!" (Think about it!)

Stay tuned for our other "Friendly Number", 10!

The Colours Of Fall...

Investigating...

Experimenting...

Creating...

We used the colours of Fall leaves as the inspiration for our Art today. The students analyzed and identified the variety of colours found in leaves they collected.  They used this information to blend different paint colours to make "shades of fall". They then used that paint to paint the "bumpy" side of the leaf. They pressed it on paper and noticed the leaf prints looked "bumpy". After making several prints they collected the painted leaves and placed them on paper to dry.

We wondered...

What will happen to the painted leaves after we leave them to dry overnight?

Our predictions:

- the leaves will stick to the paper
- the leaves will look shimmery
- the leaves will be crumpled
- the leaves will still be wet

Stay tuned...

What we found out...

-leaves become crunchy when they dry
-leaves are made of a material that doesn't dry soft (like our hair or towels)
